In this article, we will explain in detail the correct way of using the five forts plan to memorise the holy Qur’an.

What is the method of the five fortresses?

The idea of the five forts plan comes from the scholars in Egypt. It is considered to be the easiest method of all to memorise the holy Quran. This method has been tested and practised for years with children and adults, Arabic speakers as well as non-Arabic speaking students. The result was very good for all groups.

Add a little bit of body text (1)

It consists of the five stages:

  1. Systematic listening – الاستماع المنهجي
  2. Preparation – إعداد
  3. New memorization – الحفظ الجديد
  4. Near revision – الحفظ القريب
  5. Far revision – للحفظ للبعيد

The five forts plan is designed to systematically approach memorization of the holy Quran and simplify learning. The idea of the plan is to show people how to learn the holy Quran step by step. This makes it easier and clearer. Through the five important steps to follow, you will reach your goal with regular study at a very good pace.

Who is this method suitable for?

Anyone who can read Arabic with harakat correctly and  knows the basics of tajweed and can apply them while reciting the holy Quran.

First step: Systematic listening – الاستماع المنهجي

The first step in this method is to read 2 Juz per day.

It should not take the student more than 30 minutes to recite one Juz. If it does take longer, then the student can recite along with listening to the recitation of the pages the student is reciting.

You should do this for two months and in total you have finished reading the holy Quran four times.

Furthermore, the student should listen to half a Juz per day.

By regularly listening to professional Quran teachers, one perfects one’s own pronunciation by transferring it to oneself. This gives you a better feeling while reciting and you can spot mistakes more quickly.

The number of pages may vary from student to student.

This first step prepares you for the next important steps. This is the basis of the method to get to know the holy Quran better.

Second step: Preparation – إعداد

The second fortress is considered to be the strongest and most important fortress before you memorise the holy Quran.

The students will read a few pages aloud regularly every day with concentration. The number of pages depends on the type of learner. This can be 3-10 pages per day.

During the day the student should prepare for reading and just before going to sleep it is obligatory to listen for 15-20 minutes to the verses of the Quran which one will recite for the next day. At night, the brain subconsciously processes all the topics that you were busy with during the day, especially those that happened just before you went to sleep. Therefore, listening to the verses is very important so that the brain can prepare itself for the next day.

It is important to note that this step will greatly influence the next step. That also means the more motivated and better and more regularly the student does this preparation, the easier the next steps will be.

Third step: New memorization- الحفظ الجديد

Now the memorization begins. The student knows the holy Quran very well and is already very fluent in reciting it, and applying the tajweed rules is easier for the student.

Due to the long, intensive preparation, the student should not need more than 15 minutes to memorise a page. However, memorization can even take less than 15 minutes. If this happens, the student has to repeat the page until the 15 minutes are up.

The memorization must be recited slowly with serenity while feeling the meaning and observing the tajweed rules (التحقيق).

Fourth step: Near revision – الحفظ القريب

Now repeat what you have learned. This is the fourth fortress. The revision of the memorised pages should be about 20 pages per day, but this also depends on the type of learner.

The recitation should follow swiftly but with perfect tajweed (الحدر).

Fifth step: Far revision – للحفظ للبعيد

Far revision is to revise 20 pages counting back from the 20 pages of near revision once a week.

And now we have come to the end of the method and you have got to know all five fortresses. Now you should understand why it is called the five fortresses. Through this method all the words of Allah will be solidified in your memory inshallah.
